Australian Made Fire-Resistant Wall & Ceiling Panels
Durra Panel is an Australian-made wall and ceiling system manufactured from compressed wheat and rice straw. It provides an effective barrier against the penetration and spread of fire, without releasing toxic fumes, flaming droplets, or dense smoke. With a one-hour fire-rated panel-to-panel joint, the carbonising action of the straw when exposed to flame helps limit fire penetration through the densely compressed core, delivering reliable fire-resistant cladding.
How Durra Panel Responds to Fire
The Kraft liner facing begins to char when exposed to flame, without producing toxic fumes, flaming droplets, or dense smoke.
As heat increases, the densely compressed straw core starts to carbonise.
The carbonised core forms a protective layer that slows and hinders fire penetration through the panel.
The panel maintains strong thermal resistance, limiting heat transfer to the reverse side.
Once the ignition source is removed, the panel self-extinguishes.
Carbonising stops immediately, and the panel does not smoulder, curl, or distort.
Panel-to-panel joints maintain a fire resistance rating of up to one hour, tested to Australian Standards.

The ceiling at Global Switch Ultimo had to deliver fire resistance and thermal stability alongside noise control, all in a multi-level, critical IT environment where failure of any kind is not an option. Durra Panel’s suspended ceiling system met the fire safety and thermal performance demands of the facility while simultaneously managing noise from the adjacent freeway. A single system solving fire, acoustic, and thermal requirements in one of Australia’s most demanding and uncompromising built environments.

Group 2 fire rating
The ceiling at Sacred Heart College’s double-court gymnasium was required to achieve a Group 2 fire rating throughout, while also controlling internal reverberation, reducing breakout noise to surrounding buildings and residences, and surviving the daily impact of a high-traffic sports environment. Durra Panel was specified to meet all three. The modular acoustic ceiling system delivered Group 2 fire compliance, an NRC of 0.49, and an impact-resistant finish, installed from below once the roof was completed.

The Melbourne Convention Centre expansion required the installation of a three-part, 22,400m² Durra roof and ceiling system, contributing to its recognition as Australia’s first 6-Star Green Star rated convention centre. As a high-traffic public assembly venue hosting over a thousand events each year, acoustic performance, durability, and compliance were all non-negotiable requirements.
