Nestled within a heritage-fronted terrace on Johnston Street in Abbotsford, Range Brewing’s Melbourne outpost posed a unique architectural challenge. The narrow, dimly lit site was reimagined by Hurley Architects into a light-filled, functional and environmentally conscious microbrewery.
Used extensively across the ceiling, Durra Panel was selected for its natural thermal performance, a critical consideration in maintaining a stable and comfortable climate within the brewery space. Its acoustic and insulating properties support thermal control, reducing heat transfer from the roof and aiding in energy efficiency across the venue.
The panels were supplied in the Natural Finish and painted white by the client, then installed behind exposed ceiling rafters to line the entire ceiling. While subtly integrated, the panels play a crucial role in improving the space’s thermal performance – helping regulate heat within the microbrewery environment. Their minimal visual presence supports the clean, Scandinavian-inspired interior, while their functional contribution enhances the overall comfort and efficiency of the venue.
The project prioritised sustainable, biodegradable materials throughout, ensuring the fit out would not negatively impact the environment over its lifecycle. Durra Panel’s low-carbon footprint and compostable core aligned perfectly with these values, making it a natural choice for this forward-thinking space.
The result is a welcoming, high-performing venue that merges practicality with personality, delivering a little slice of Queensland to inner-city Melbourne.
