Durra Panel and the Outback Climate Smart Home

The Outback Climate Smart Home was designed to showcase sustainable and climate-resilient building solutions, and Durra Panel played a central role in achieving this vision.
"What excites me most about Durra Panel is its sustainability credentials. It's made from agricultural by-products, which means we are re-valuing farming byproducts while building a home that works in harmony with nature." -Dr. Anika Molesworth

Made from compressed wheat straw, Durra Panel is a renewable, biodegradable building material that combines environmental responsibility with high performance. The decision to incorporate Durra Panel into the Outback Smart Home was based on its ability to meet the challenges of living in the harsh conditions of the Australian outback, where extreme temperatures and the need for energy efficiency are paramount.

Home builder Dr. Anika Molesworth fell in love with the product as soon as she read about it. “Living in a rural, arid environment, I know firsthand how important it is to live in homes that can withstand climate extremes. Durra Panel’s unique properties, including its fire resistance and excellent thermal insulation, make it an ideal choice for creating a comfortable and safe living environment in the outback.” She adds, “What excites me most about Durra Panel is its sustainability credentials. It’s made from agricultural by-products, which means we are re-valuing farming byproducts while building a home that works in harmony with nature.”

Durra Panel contributes significantly to the energy efficiency of the Outback Climate Smart Home. Its natural insulation properties help maintain stable indoor temperatures, reducing the need for air conditioning in the sweltering heat and minimising heating during cooler months. The material’s sound-dampening qualities further enhance the living experience by reducing external noise, creating a peaceful indoor environment.

In addition to its thermal and acoustic benefits, Durra Panel is also fire-resistant, a critical feature for homes in bushfire-prone areas in rural Australia. “Building with materials that can protect homes from fire is essential, especially as climate change increases the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events,” says Dr. Molesworth.

By incorporating Durra Panel, the Outback Climate Smart Home exemplifies how modern construction can address both the environmental challenges of today and the unpredictable climate conditions of the future. The Outback Climate Smart Home’s regenerative design is evident, proving that it is possible to create beautiful, functional homes that positively impact both people and the planet.
