Grimshaw Architects’ Melbourne Studio fit-out was designed to embody the practice’s commitment to sustainability, circularity, and thoughtful material selection. The goal was to create a workspace that balances high-performance acoustics with a low environmental footprint—demonstrating how design, disassembly, and responsible sourcing can work together in a contemporary studio environment.

Durra Panel was selected as a core material due to its natural finish, acoustic performance, and minimal‑impact manufacturing process. The space includes a dedicated model-making display area and collaborative zones where acoustic control and visual warmth were essential. Materials were chosen not only for performance on day one, but for their ability to be reused, recycled, or returned to the earth at the end of life.
As the project team noted, Durra Panel aligned perfectly with their sustainability ambitions: made from a locally grown agricultural by-product, produced in regional Victoria without water or gas, and generating zero toxic waste.
