In 2010, Gold Coast Airport completed a major $100 million redevelopment of its Arrivals Terminal, transforming passenger experience and preparing the airport for significant future growth. The project was completed in January and went on to earn the title of Australia’s Major Airport of the Year by the Australian Airports Association.
Durra Panel was installed throughout the ceilings of the Arrivals Terminal, chosen for its dual acoustic performance, managing both low-frequency external noise from aircraft operations and internal reverberation caused by high passenger volumes.
The densely compressed straw core of the panel, combined with its durability and impact-resistance, provided an effective, low-maintenance solution for controlling sound in a high-traffic public space, enhancing cost, comfort and performance.
Beyond its acoustic performance, the use of Durra Panel contributed significant environmental benefits:
• 30.13 tonnes of CO₂ extracted from the atmosphere
• 8.26 tonnes of carbon stored within the panels
• A –18.47 tonnes CO₂e Global Warming Potential (GWP), demonstrating a net positive environmental impact
