The Docklands Studios project presented a unique set of challenges, requiring the design and construction of state-of-the-art film and television studios on a highly constrained and complex site. The studio land sits on the Yarra River floodplain, offering no solid foundation material for traditional construction. Compounding the challenge, a multi-lane expressway ran adjacent to the complex at roof level, demanding careful consideration of vibration, noise, and structural load.
To achieve a high-performance, acoustically refined studio environment, the design team prioritised a lightweight and durable acoustic shell. Durra Panel Roof Ceiling Systems were selected for their exceptional acoustic performance, structural versatility, and efficiency in large-scale projects. The panels, finished in Natural and Cement, allowed for superior sound absorption and noise isolation, ensuring high-quality recording and production environments despite the challenging site conditions.
The project team collaborated closely across disciplines: Hassell and Benier Francis provided architectural direction, Probuild managed construction, Barden Steel Deck installed the panel systems, and Marshall Day ensured acoustic performance met the rigorous standards required for professional studios.
Using Durra Panels enabled modular and rapid installation, minimising on-site risks while maintaining precision and consistency. The lightweight panels also reduced structural demands, critical for construction on flood-prone ground. By combining innovative construction techniques with high-performance materials, Docklands Studios successfully delivered a world-class facility capable of supporting Australia’s growing film and television production industry.
