Alex Flood’s Drum & Music Production Studio – Adelaide, SA

Project Requirements

As a professional musician, Alex needed a dedicated home space to practise drums and produce music without the noise restrictions of the existing environment.

The available single-car garage presented several design considerations. The studio needed to provide effective sound isolation while fitting within a limited footprint, retaining a walkway and access to the adjoining laundry. As the studio was being incorporated into an existing townhouse, a non-permanent solution was also preferred.

A custom Durra Panel Series 3 Acoustic Studio Kit was designed to meet these requirements, providing a freestanding studio that could be installed within the garage without permanent fixing to the surrounding walls or ceiling.

Custom Studio Solution

Approximately 85 m² of Durra Panel was incorporated into the Series 3 system, supported by Durra Steel framing. The configuration was customised to the dimensions and layout of the garage, maximising the internal studio space while maintaining the required circulation and access around it.

The modular construction also allows the studio to be disassembled and reused in another location, providing Alex with the flexibility to retain the studio if he relocates in the future.

Installation and Acoustic Treatment

The studio was assembled by Alex with assistance from his father and friends, with the complete installation taking approximately two weeks.

Rubber matting was installed by Alex beneath the steel framing to reduce vibration transfer and protect the existing garage floor. Following construction, Alex painted the Durra Panels and installed additional acoustic absorption panels and door seals to complete the internal treatment.

The completed studio provides a dedicated environment for drum practice, rehearsal and music production, with minimal sound leakage outside the space. The result allows Alex to practise and produce music from home with significantly greater flexibility, while retaining the ability to dismantle and relocate the studio if required.
