In a recent episode of The Renovation Collaborative Podcast, Matt shares the story behind his Scarborough Sustainable House, located in Perth’s warm temperate coastal suburb of Scarborough. Designed using standard construction methods and renewable materials, the home demonstrates that sustainability doesn’t have to mean compromise, or cost more.
The Scarborough Sustainable House was designed for clients who were deeply committed to creating a home that was both comfortable and environmentally responsible. Their brief focused on:
• A compact, efficient floor plan connected to a productive garden
• Maximum thermal comfort now and into the future
• A low-carbon footprint through material choices and life cycle analysis
• A modest, achievable budget
Matt’s solution was to combine climate-responsive design with cost-effective construction techniques and materials, including Durra Panel internal wall and ceiling linings.
Durra Panel offered a renewable, high-performance alternative to conventional plasterboard, aligning perfectly with the project’s sustainability goals.
Formed from compressed straw stubble that would otherwise be burned post-harvest, Durra Panel repurposes agricultural residue into a robust, thermally efficient building material. This process not only diverts waste from burning but also contributes to carbon sequestration and improved indoor air quality.
As Matt explains in the podcast, using Durra Panel brought both environmental and practical advantages:
• Renewable and biodegradable: made from agricultural waste, not mined resources
• Highly flame-resistant: adds safety without the need for toxic coatings
• Excellent acoustic and thermal insulation: naturally regulates temperature and sound
• Cost-effective and easy to install: ideal for keeping budgets under control
The expressed panel joins were embraced as an honest design feature, reinforcing the home’s natural material palette and sustainable ethos.
To achieve maximum energy efficiency in Perth’s warm temperate climate, the home was oriented to the north with carefully positioned windows and shading. Double-glazed, thermally broken windows, exposed concrete floors, and recycled brickwork helped stabilise internal temperatures, all working together with Durra Panel’s insulating properties to reduce the home’s energy demand.
The Scarborough Sustainable House is proof that sustainable building doesn’t require high-tech systems or luxury budgets. By combining renewable materials, passive design principles, and smart construction choices, Matt and his team have created a home that is efficient, comfortable, and achievable for everyday Australians.
