On a recent walk-through of Melbourne Park’s world-class tennis and events precinct, the BY Design team had a closer look at the design thinking behind its newest addition: Centrepiece. Installed discreetly behind various linings throughout the courts and conference spaces, Durra Panel plays a critical role in the acoustic performance of the venue.

Durra Panel was used extensively throughout the Grand Hall, courts and conference spaces at Melbourne Park, integrated into the roof system and wall structures, and concealed behind decorative timber linings. Chosen for its natural acoustic properties and strong sustainability credentials, the panel plays a vital role in delivering high-performance sound control while supporting the project’s environmental goals, proving that practical performance and architectural design can seamlessly coexist.
Durra Panel is manufactured from reclaimed wheat straw stubble, material that would typically be burned after harvest and contributing to CO₂ emissions. By repurposing this agricultural byproduct, Durra Panel provides a low-impact alternative to conventional linings, making it a fitting choice for Melbourne Park’s commitment to both high performance and environmental responsibility.
It’s a reminder that some of the most effective materials aren’t always visible, but their impact is heard loud and clear.
The Melbourne Park redevelopment demonstrates the performance and adaptability of the Durra Panel system in a complex, large-scale civic environment. At Centrepiece, the pleated roof structure features Durra Panel as the core ceiling lining material—selected for its acoustic insulation, thermal efficiency, fire resistance, and sustainability profile.
Prefabricated V-shaped ceiling modules, incorporating Durra Panels and Durra Steel Sections, were engineered and lifted into place using a custom-developed frame to streamline installation and enhance safety. The result is a high-performance, acoustically tuned venue that meets the demands of live broadcast, large-scale events, and civic gatherings alike.
